Bug Boy & the Frightening Lightning

a deadly, adorable combo

It's a hot autumn night and the birds are starving.Defeat enemies in a procedurally generated dungeon, zap them with your lightning, and survive through the night! Remember that DEATH IS NOT THE END. Continue to upgrade your skills each play through and don't give up. I am so incredibly proud of “Bug Boy”. With my last semester in college, it’s pretty crazy how much I’ve learned since my very first game. This jam really challenged my skills as a technical artist, making the VFX, shaders, wind effects, setting up prefabs, optimizing, and pretty much everything I ever could’ve hoped for. This game was made for Texas Game Jam 2021 with the very talented team of Jake Nguyen, Robert Guan, Noah Sotolongo, Leah Liu, Wade Bribach, Ále Acevedo, and Remi Cooper.

When the jam started, we really hit the ground running. I was also lucky to be put with a very talented team. I still can’t believe we made this in only 48 hours! The lightning attack you see above is actually made up of a rectangular piece of geometry. A transparent PNG of lightning scrolls along it lengthwise.Throughout the game you see wind and stray leaves flying around. These are all single-object particle systems that are instanced in random places within the area’s bounds, given a random rotation, and sent off to fly.
