Funkytown

is a place where (almost) everyone can boogie all night long.

I worked on a teensy 3-person team for this game over a weekend for BLM Game Jam. I worked a lot as both an artist and a programmer, since we needed the help and I wanted to challenge myself. Follow Fox, a guy who just wants to have a disco party. Unfortunately, everyone in town has some problem or other.

Some buildings are from Pokémon! We needed the help. Admittedly the animals’ problems are overly simplified, and so they can’t possibly be compared in magnitude to real world problems. At the end of the day, you just convince the animals to act more kind to one another.

The timer on the top left resets the day. We tried to go for the same genre of MINIT or Groundhog Day, where the player can try different dialog options once a day until they get it right. This is rooted in the idea that those who do not learn history, are doomed to repeat it. This idea would have been conveyed more cleanly if ‘we had more time. . . more people’ but I think we did really well for such a small team! We were also delighted to be mentored by Tony Barnes and Travis Williams, who provided more guidance, advice, and encouragement than we ever could’ve wished for.

This game was made with Jesus Salinas and Mindy Van.
